With 7.9 million yearly passengers, intuitive wayfinding at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) is a necessity for quick navigation in, out and through the terminals. The Kenton County Airport Board hired the design team to assess all pedestrian and vehicular flow specifically at the Transportation Center and Baggage Claim areas of Terminal 3, both of which would be affected due to the upcoming relocation of the Car Rental Terminal. The existing signage was ineffective due to colorless and overused signage nomenclature added to the already challenging layout and flow of the interior and exterior spaces. MSA’s streamlined solution reduced the quantity of exterior signs and redefined the information systems used throughout these spaces. The new signage package incorporates the use of color-coding and prominent international icons as major navigation tools for visitors. These tools are integrated into branded stations ranging from taxis and public transit, to hotel shuttle service and pedestrian pick-up. The use of these branded areas continues from the curb-side on into the baggage claim area. The signage design is a blend of new design and existing signage design.
