The design of the building while unique in character, incorporates materials that are consistent with the style of the surrounding community. There’s an extensive use of stone and brick on the exterior, and the roof is all metal construction. The durability of materials carries to the inside of the building, since it is anticipated that this will be one of the busiest fire stations in the city, and it is a facility occupied 24/7. The design of the fire station incorporates sustainable features that focus on energy efficiency and low long term operating costs. While the building is not being designed for LEED certification, the design team has used the USGB LEED guide for New Construction and Major Renovations as a guideline. The project includes geothermal water source heat pumps for heating and cooling, natural ventilation in the apparatus bays, water efficient landscaping and controlled use of natural daylighting.
