A model can be changed in minutes. A rendering can show multiple material or lighting options. A VR environment can help a client understand scale and movement. A 3D printer can turn a digital model into a physical object that can be held, studied, and discussed. That speed creates more room for iteration.

Instead of asking, “Is this the answer?” designers can ask, “What else could this be?” But technology also comes with limitations.

A rendering can look convincing without accurately communicating the experience of a space. A virtual environment cannot fully capture every sensory detail of a physical place. A digital model can make it easy to explore countless possibilities without necessarily making it easier to determine which one is the right solution.

And as technology becomes more capable, there is a risk of allowing the tool to lead the process instead of supporting it.

The goal is not to use technology simply because it is available. The goal is to understand when it adds value.

The Human Side of Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence is perhaps the most significant development currently changing the conversation around design.

Artificial intelligence is a topic that is difficult to approach, regardless of your chosen discipline. It is polarizing, threatening, political, fascinating, and pure opportunity… all at once.

It is beginning to change the tools architects use, but its greatest potential may be less about replacing the act of design and more about expanding what designers are able to explore. AI can rapidly organize information, analyze alternatives, generate early visual studies and help designers test ideas that might otherwise require significant time to develop. Used well, that creates more opportunities to ask “what if?” before committing to a direction.

Ultimately, there is no replacement for the human ability to hear what an owner is communicating, understand the tone and context behind it, prioritize that information in real time, and simultaneously weigh countless contributing variables through the lens of the human beings who will ultimately experience the result. While AI is developing at breakneck speed, that remains a bridge too far for the technology we have today.

At MSA, we are exploring where these emerging tools can provide meaningful value throughout the design process. The technology is evolving quickly, and many architectural applications are still developing, so our focus is not simply adopting AI because it is new. It is understanding where it can make us more curious, more informed, and more creative. Our goal is to identify where AI can support that judgment rather than attempt to replace it. AI can help us explore possibilities faster, but deciding which possibilities are actually worth pursuing remains the work of the designer.

For now, AI is simply another tool. Rendering helps us see. Physical models help us understand. AI helps us explore.

Technology Is Part of the Process, Not the Process Itself

The most valuable digital tools are not the ones that produce the most impressive images. They are the ones that help move a project forward.

Early in a project, technology can help transform an abstract idea into something a client and design team can react to. As the design develops, those same tools can help test alternatives, identify challenges, coordinate information, and communicate decisions.

That creates a more connected transition from early ideas to built environments.

A client may begin with a vision that is difficult to put into words. Through sketches, models, renderings, simulations, and conversations, that vision can become more tangible. Each iteration provides another opportunity to ask questions, gather feedback, and make informed decisions.

Technology makes those iterations easier.

But iteration alone does not create good design. It takes experience to understand what feedback matters. It takes curiosity to recognize an opportunity. It takes creativity to develop a meaningful response. And it takes judgment to know when an idea has become the right solution.
